Beta Theta Pi was the first fraternity to divide management of the organization into districts. Assistant general secretaries, commonly known as district chiefs, are local volunteers who work with their assigned chapters and report directly to the general secretary. The primary duties of a district chief include appointing and coaching chapter advisors, implementing General Fraternity standards and policies and serving as the primary General Fraternity ambassador in an assigned district. Many districts also include assistant district chiefs who work specifically with one or two chapters and assist the district chief in his duties.
