Beta Theta Pi has enjoyed a four-year partnership with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), the industry leader in wilderness education. While the student cost for BWC is higher than other programs, the NOLS partnership has positively affected the rigor of the program and greatly enhanced the quality of the curriculum. This physically demanding experience allows participants to learn leadership, self-awareness, communication, an array of outdoor skills and, most importantly, how the Ritual applies to their daily lives.
The award-winning Beta Wilderness Challenge was endowed and named by Carolyn and Jeffrey N. Newton, Miami '77, in memory of Carolyn's father, Donald W. English, Ohio State '47. This program received the Excellence in Educational Programming Award from the Association of Fraternity Advisors (2003) and the Best Use of a Foundation Grant Award from the North-American Interfraternity Conference Foundation Seminar (2008.) Consistent with other significant cost-cutting measures implemented over the past 18 months, The Beta Wilderness Challenge will be suspended until further notice. The Fraternity’s leadership will continue to closely evaluate all of the Fraternity’s expenditures to ensure that all programs and services of the General Fraternity are generating the greatest return on investment as possible for Beta’s 121 chapters and colonies.
